As part of the Network Rail Wessex CP5 E&P Renewals S1&S2 Project, Powersys were commissioned by HVMS to develop the full detailed design package for earthing renewals of 19No. TP Huts and Substations in the Wessex area: Ashtead, Ashurst, Clandon, Foxhills, Grayswood, Haslemere, Locks Heath, London Road, Lower Swanwick, Mayford, Micheldever, Milford, Oakley, Otterbourne, Shalford, Shottermill, Wanborough, Witley, and Worplesdon.
This included the renewal of existing earthing installations to comply with current standards BS50122, BS50522, BS7430, and BS7671, via the provision of adequate, safe and compliant earth farms, designed to a maximum of 5? resistance-to-earth for TP Huts, and to a maximum of 1? resistance-to-earth for Substations.
Powersys acted as Principal Designer and was responsible for developing Network Rail GRIP 4 and GRIP 5 designs including, but not limited to; soil resistivity tests, site survey to identify existing earthing arrangement, condition assessment, proposal of viable locations for the new earth (earth rods, earth bars with removable links, copper tapes and earthing cable route management systems), multi-discipline Civil and E&P design for the new earth farm site layouts and cable route management systems, main Earth Terminal specification, Earthing Single Line Diagrams, Earthing elevation designs and co-ordination of the decommission and removal of all redundant earthing assets.
Powersys overall aim was to work towards securing an Approval in Principle from the stakeholder, and ultimately an approval for construction.
